Synopsis
In a world of anthropomorphic animals a koala named Buster seeks to regain the lost glory of his theater. To achieve this he calls a singing contest in which $100,000 will be given to the winner. Thus animals come motivated by money, fame and the great opportunity to demonstrate their talent.

Argument
In a city of anthropomorphic animals called Calatonia, the owner of the moon theater, the koala Buster Moon, organizes a singing contest to promote his struggling theater, after the financial problems raised by the representative of the bank, the name Judith. A mishap involving the Glass Eye Of Buster's assistant, the elderly iguana Miss Crawly, applies two additional zeros to the prize money, and the poorly printed flyers are thrown out of the window into the street.

Animals from all over the city gather for auditions. Those selected include: the housewife and mother of 25 piglets, Rosita; the Punk Rock fanatic porcupine, Ash; The Gorilla Johnny, son of the mobster Big Daddy; the mouse and street musician, Mike. Teen elephant Meena fails her audition due to her stage fright, while Ash's moody boyfriend Lance is fired from the contest. Rosita combines with a lush pig named Gunter for a dance routine. Buster discovers that the Flyers announce a prize of $ 100,000, money he does not have, but he remains optimistic. He arranges a visit with his friend Eddie's grandmother, opera and stage actress Nana Noodleman, who hesitates to sponsor the award, but agrees to attend a private performance of the show.

Pressed by her grandfather, Meena tries to ask Buster for another chance to introduce herself, but becomes her stage hand. When the trio of frogs break up and quit, and Pete gets injured, Meena is added as an act (even though Buster hasn't heard her sing). Rosita falters in her dance routine with Gunter, distracted by her parenting duties that have fallen into disarray. After discovering that Lance broke up with her to be with his new girlfriend, telling her he will never be around anymore, and evicting him from his apartment, Ash breaks down while singing his assigned song, "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen. Johnny is torn between rehearsals and having to help his father as a getaway car driver in a heist. Trying to do both, he is unable to pick up the robbers on time due to traffic, and his father and his gang are arrested. Meena gets no help overcoming her stage fright, and Mike, sure the prize money is as good as his own, buys a fancy car to impress a female mouse and scams a group of bears in a card game.

On preview day, the Bears interrupt the show, demanding the money from Mike, who points to Buster. The Bears open the prize chest, but do not find the $ 100,000. The luminescent squid glass tank illuminating the stage breaks and floods the theater, which collapses. Judith retrieves the lot, and Buster who was living at her desk in the theater, settles in with Eddie at her parents ' pool house. The contestants try to cheer him up, but Buster is too dejected to listen. Try to start again by opening a car wash.

When Meena goes to the rubble of the theater and sings Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah", Buster listens to her and is inspired to reinstate the show without the prize money, performing on an impromptu stage in the parking lot for Rosita and Meena's families, Rosita and Gunter perform Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off", which eventually prompts Rosita's husband Norman to pay attention to her singing talent. More animals are attracted to the scene as the show airs on the news. Johnny's rendition of Elton John's "I'm Still Standing" impresses his father, who escapes from prison to reconcile with him. Despite Judith's interruption, Ash sings her original rock song "Set It All Free", which her ex-boyfriend sees on television and eventually recognizes Ash's talent. Mike returns to the show and sings Frank Sinatra's "My Way," and Meena finally overcomes her stage fright and sings Stevie Wonder's "don't You Worry 'bout A Thing," which literally knocks down half the stage.

The show is a success and impresses Nana, who was in the audience. She buys the lot and the theater is rebuilt and reopened.

During the credits, the theater squids are shown singing Stevie Wonder's "Faith".
