Digging Up Anxiety and IM THINKING OF ENDING THINGS
Yes, there is another film that may require our ability to think hard about what really happened. Full of scenes that always feel confusing and absurd like a dream, I usually don't really like that kind of movie. But for some reason after watching I'm Thinking of Ending Things , Netflix's newest film, I was really curious and always interested in digging deeper into what Charlie Kaufman really wanted to convey.
It seems that what always manages to hook me in is the character. All of the characters in it, especially the four characters in it, have produced an energetic, intense and wild appearance. It's so wild, that it even drains my energy to see the four of them interact with each other because of how awesome the moment they produced.
A young woman (Jessie Buckley) and her boyfriend, Jake (Jesse Plemons) go to Jake's parents' house which is far from the city. Winter has arrived and there are already signs of heavy snowfall, so this young woman always reminds Jake to come home before it's too late and a snowstorm arrives, and Jake who always answers him with "I have a chain for wheels in the trunk." During the trip we can already see how clumsy the two of them are, with the conversation they are talking about.

This young Wantia does not have a name. Throughout the film she is called by the name Yvonne. Is she named Yvonne? Then he was called by the name Lucy. Is she named Lucy? She was also called by the name Louisa at one time. Is Louisa his real name? What's his real name? Or is this young woman really there or just one part of the various surrealist moments that Charlie Kaufman presents? Even the awkwardness we have felt when he was in the car and he saw a really beautiful swing in front of the destroyed house, and only he saw it, not with Jake.

During the trip he always said in his mind to end something. End what, exactly? Does ending his relationship with Jake even though he himself knows that Jake is a good person? Or maybe there is something else he wants to end? With I'm Thinking of Ending Things , Charlie Kaufman does not give easy answers to the audience. It only acts as an intermediary between the novel based on this film of the same name and the imagination it has to the audience, and although I am still confused about many things but I am always interested and this film always works no matter how absurd a scene passes- weeds.

Then when they get to the parents' house is the best part of this film, as Charlie Kaufman's original purpose in this film is perfectly realized in one scene that I think is one of the best scenes of the year: dinner with the four. Both of Jake's parents were perfectly portrayed by Toni Collette and David Thewlis. Toni Collette is certainly no stranger to seeing him play an eccentric role like in Hereditary and David Thewlis will certainly remind me of his role in Fargo which is no less strange in a very good sense.

Having dinner with them is very interesting. Going on ridiculous with his dark humor that managed to make me feel awkward and laugh, and also really crazy. The conversations and interactions of the four are unpredictable, one person can laugh while one person only smiles, another person tells stories and the other person is silent and looks uncomfortable. From discussing photos to the trivia game Jake played back then, this dinner manages to establish the awkwardness we will feel in that situation and that is where the main part of this film lies.

What I caught from I'm Thinking of Ending Things is how a person must face his anxiety and anxiety to face the parents of our partner. That young woman is us, that's why she doesn't have a definite name because she is all of us and we can all be her. At least that's what I caught, and that dinner scene perfectly embodies all our terrors and fears when we meet our partner's parents. We feel uncomfortable, awkward, and can only let go of the situations they create. Whether the situation is hilarious, creepy or awkward, we can only surrender and face it head-on.
The transitions and editing in the film also help build up odd feelings, such as when both parents take the young woman over for dinner. Jake and his parents entered the dining room, with the young woman still silent. When he looked at the dining table, the color of the film changed from dark blue to warm orange and the three of them were sitting neatly and turning to the young woman, the table was full of food, and her father's hair had changed from white to dark brown. This scene felt like a surrealist play that Charlie Kaufman wanted to wake up to his audience and give them the feeling of anxiety that the young woman also felt, and it worked.
The 4: 3 aspect ratio used by cinematographer Łukasz Żal ( Cold War ) - which produces a boxy film like The Lighthouse - also gives off a claustrophobic vibe, confining the character in the situations and stress he faces and the anxiety he always thinks about in his head. . The feeling of being locked up also plays an important role in the film, because with the situation it faces we can see the dynamics between the four characters more closely and also more intensely.
It's not easy to watch I'm Thinking of Ending Things and I don't think this is a one-time film. Maybe if time has passed for so long and we go back to watching it, we will find a different meaning from what we got before. Maybe now I think this is a film about anxiety, but in the future when I re-watch it (don't know when, but there will be a time) I will have some insight into something I haven't been aware of at the moment, and that's why I believe this is a sample film. that can last for years, and Netflix should be proud of that.
And not only the dinner scene, but the last 20 minutes of the film is also very beautiful and has a feeling of a very strong meaning, even though I still can't fully understand it. So beautiful!
I'm Thinking of Ending Things can now be watched on Netflix .
