Greg Daniels and Steve Carell Launch Season One of SPACE FORCE
Prior to Space Force , the two collaborated on - certainly one of the most iconic TV series - The Office . Full of aphorisms that are ready to be made into fresh memes , a collection of wacky characters and a humor that always hits (except for the last two seasons), The Office is one of the sitcoms I like the most. Of course, I also really anticipate the new collaboration that has aired on Netflix.
Space Force was interestingly released months after a branch of the United States military, the United States Space Force , established itself as independent at the end of 2019. Remember when the internet was booming because the United States Space Force logo resembled the logo from Star Trek ? That is. The Space Force's original story wasalso linear with the designation of the United States Space Force as an independent organization.
In the first episode, “THE LAUNCH”, Mark Naird (Steve Carell) is promoted to four-star general and hopes to replace Kick Grabaston (Noah Emmerich), one of his nemesis, as leader of the air force. During a meeting between generals, it was discovered that the US President wanted to dominate outer space and form a new military branch called the Space Force . Mark could only laugh at how ridiculous his idea was. What he didn't know was that he was chosen to lead the new branch of the military, where he could only put on a shocked face and say "What?"

If The Office is made to resemble a documentary, with very fast camera movements and the use of zooming in to each character's face, it is different from Space Force which uses a cleaner and more stable cinematography. But even so, both of them have similarities. It's true that Steve Carell is in both series, and his character is also similar to Michael Scott from The Office , but both series tell a comedy about work, and that's where Space Force still can't be as successful as The Office .

Space Force tells the comedy with satire. And of course, just like how satirical comedy should be, this series should have a subject that will serve as a joke. They already have it. But what is unfortunate is that their humor is not so focused on the satirical part. They had tons of ingredients, but decided to play it safe. We end up with workplace comedies like The Office , and we end up with comedic humor that sadly sounds half-assed.

Some of his satirical humor is extremely rare, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. When Space Force is throwing outrageous comedy events in the real world, they are always right on target and that's why it's a shame they don't get so focused on the satire part. Like where they talk very often about their President, who is very fond of Twitter and often tweets something aggressive. Of course, even though we were never told directly, we knew right away that it was the current President of the United States, Donald Trump. “ Boobs on the moon ,” he tweeted , and his subordinates could only think of it as a typo and think of it as “Boots on the moon . "

Of course the one in full control is Steve Carell. The majority of his humor comes from his character who closely resembles his character in The Office . Both of them are the leaders of their workplaces, both of them often have ridiculous ideas that are not understood by their subordinates, both of them are often disappointed by the end result of their ideas and both also often become heroes at the end of episodes. Although the comedy humor of this series is still not very mature, Mark Naird's character still manages to make Space Office better than it should be.

And I can't say that to the other characters. John Malkovich, who plays Adrian Mallory, a doctor and scientist in their Space Force , can make up for Steve Carell's silliness but not much material is given to him. Ben Schwartz, who is a media consultant for Space Force , F. Tony or as everyone is often called Fuck Tony, also feels cringe more often than funny. Perhaps the one who always delivers unexpected comedy is Brad (Don Lake), a general and assistant to Mark Naird who is often looked down upon by his colleagues.
The first season still looks like it doesn't really take advantage of the satirical material it has, but that doesn't mean Space Force is n't entertaining. Some episodes can still be very interesting to follow, while some episodes can be flat. It's possible, like most sitcoms , that its first season still hasn't hit the right track. Hopefully his second season (if any) can find the right rhythm and material to hit Greg Daniels' comedy standards.
