Guy Ritchies Return to His Old World in THE GENTLEMEN
Seeing the advertisement for The Gentlemen , I immediately remembered two films by Guy Ritchie in 1998 and 2000, namely Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch . A crime film in England which is also sprinkled with comedy elements and a unique collection of characters. The difference? The Gentlemen , although quite entertaining, cannot touch the excitement that the two films I mentioned earlier have.
Actually, I still don't really know where Guy Ritchie went wrong in making this film because this film actually has very good ingredients to make the perfect recipe for an interesting film. Fast-paced stories, well-known film players, comedy that has become Ritchie's trademark. Really, I want to love this film as much as I like Lock, Stock or Snatch . But you can't, something doesn't quite fit.
Perhaps my biggest obstacle to liking this film completely lies in the opening of the film. Starting from the opening scene to the animation, everything feels really awkward. The animation, which shows the names of the players and the images behind them in a puff of smoke, feels very old-fashioned and ugly. The first few minutes I didn't like him. Even at the start when Fletcher (Hugh Grant) tries to tell his story to Raymond (Charlie Hunnam), it all seems baffling and throws me off the excitement I've been waiting for. And maybe this is what makes my excitement while watching less.

Given that this film was made by Guy Ritchie, of course this film contains elements of violence as well as elements of comedy. All characters, even though they look fierce and ferocious, have their own comedic moments, which contain a funny element in quite sadistic scenes. After going through the first few minutes, the new story went pretty smoothly and I just started to feel the fun of the film. Whether the characters are silly, the story goes so fast, or the conversation feels very comical, The Gentlemen is still able to bring the story for 2 hours quite entertaining.

It's possible that those of you who have never watched Ritchie's films can think this film is too messy or too messy because the story is jumping around and running quite fast. But if you watch Lock, Stock or Snatch , that's the hallmark of the film. It takes a warm-up at the beginning of the film to really get into the story. And the warm-up of The Gentlemen at the beginning of the film fails. But when it runs in the middle, the film has all the excitement.

Although the story of this film centers on the character Mickey Pearson played by McConaughey, what makes this film exciting lies in the other characters. Raymond, who is Mickey's subordinate, even though he looks handsome and deadly, is apparently an OCD ( Obsessive compulsive disorder ). He could not stand seeing other people wearing shoes in the house. He is also not happy when someone smokes in the house, so he finally gives up and invites Fletcher to chat in their yard.

Likewise with his co-star, Fletcher, who has a very different personality from Raymond. His eccentric behavior often disturbs his interlocutors, so that it often provokes laughter and actually the fight between the two is quite entertaining. Not only Fletcher and Raymond, there are still many characters who help sustain the film which may not stand out from the point of view of the story itself. Like Coach (Colin Farrell) who is a young boxer trainer. Because of the ridiculous actions of his students, he finally had to work for Raymond.
The aspect of the story itself doesn't really stand out. It is true. Actually, if you watch it carefully and pay attention to the aspect of the story you have, this film is not new. Not fresh. Even though the film's story is often played here and there, there is nothing that really surprises me, and it's a shame considering that this film already has characters who are more than capable of telling a complicated story. This story may seem complicated, but it's really nothing that really gets the audience thinking.
This film may still not be able to touch the excitement that the film Lock, Stock or Snatch has, even though it is in such a way. However, the characters are very fun and the humor of the film is quite fun, The Gentlemen is still a film that is quite entertaining even though the story is not too new and the opening is quite bad.
