HALLOWEEN SEASON" IS A COLUMN IN WHICH IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS TO OCTOBER 31ST IS TO WRITE ABOUT HORROR FILMS THAT ARE SURE TO CELEBRATE THE COMING OF HALLOWEEN.
Say his name five times in front of the mirror and he will appear and kill you with the hook in his right arm. That's about the myths and legends of a figure named "Candyman" who was told in the film of the same title and released in 1992. And that's what I love about the Candyman film which also makes it unique, which is how this film uses an urban legend concept - a concept we often hear in society - and makes it a horror driver .

The film starts with a woman retelling to our main character about a creepy incident that happened to the acquaintance of her (quite long) roommate's boyfriend named Billy, who is now going crazy because he saw his girlfriend murdered sadistically in the bathroom after mentioning the name "Candyman" five. times in front of the bathroom. Our main character, Helen (Virginia Madsen), is a woman who is working on a thesis on the legend of the "Candyman" and together with her friend, Bernadette (Kasi Lemmons), begins investigating the legend for their thesis.

During their investigation, Helen and Bernadette began investigating old cases of brutal and brutal murders believed to have been committed by "Candyman", the subject of their thesis. Their investigative journey did not contain conclusive evidence that "Candyman" was a supernatural figure, and even at one point believed that "Candyman" was just a nickname for a punk who often carried the hook with him. Skeptics of the legend, Helen and Bernadette both said “Candyman” in front of the bathroom glass, although only Helen mentioned it up to five times.

Let me say from now on that Candyman is a creepy movie. Creepy in its concept, creepy when building its atmosphere, and creepy when chaos has begun to occur. Candyman is indeed a pretty gore movie  , with never hesitation to show the red blood flooding the floor in every scene or how every victim of "Candyman" is always killed in a brutal way. But the  gore he has is not just a random  gore that exists just to make the audience nauseous. Gore here has a purpose, with a concept behind it.

The urban legend is something we hear a lot about. Moreover, we are in Indonesia, where there are so many superstitions and myths that roam the community with each island and region having different superstitions. And of course the most important question for any superstition is… is it really real? Or is it just a story to scare young children from being naughty and leaving the house when it was late in the evening? Even though many would say they don't believe it, not a few still secretly believe in these myths. Whether it's true or just a story, superstition works and still scares us, and neither does the “Candyman” in  Candyman .

What makes it creepy is that from the beginning of the film, "Candyman" has been declared a superstition that the characters in the film believe in. Unlike  Halloween or  Saw where the people never heard or never had superstitions about Michael Myers or John Kramer. At the  CandymanEveryone had heard of the mysterious “Candyman”, and because it was just a superstition, Helena and Bernadette didn't really believe it. And that is precisely what makes the creepy feeling even more aroused, to know a myth can really live and threaten someone's life. And isn't that what we are afraid of, if the myths and superstitions we often hear as a child can apparently happen to us just because we don't believe in them?

Apart from the concept and how they set up a pretty terrifying atmosphere, is Tony Todd's appearance as the “Candyman” which I can say is quite a bit of a scare even though he doesn't appear often enough. Not often, but every time he appeared, hook in the right hand; a cloak that covers the whole body to the toes which is pretty cool; his cold stature and his echoing, intimidating voice can make a scene quickly turn dark and shivering. It is not difficult to see why his character is often included in the list of the most iconic slasher characters  on various film sites.

Then the music! Composed by Philip Glass ( Mishima ,  Kundun ,  The Truman Show ), Candyman's music  with “It Was Always You, Helen” is truly iconic and quite separates itself from horror music  in general and can match iconic music like that of Halloween  with both of them being the same. -same use the piano to give a terrible music and also get stuck in the head, even I looked it up on Spotify and tried to learn to play it on the piano Just listen for two seconds and you can easily tell this is Candyman music , which is terrible but also touching and… sad? What is certain is that it sounds simple but it also has quite a complex and deep impact on the story in the film.

The music, along with the ending of  Candyman , provides a conclusion that is quite unique to a horror film  , which is creepy but also quite ironic and concerned. If we usually feel satisfied after watching horror films  or are afraid, it is different from  Candyman which seems to give an open feeling. We can be scared, or we can be concerned about how this story ends its characters. After all, it's the perfect movie to watch on Halloween, and I really love it. Now just waiting for  Candyman which will come out next year and also be a sequel to the film, skipping the two that came out earlier in 1995 and 1999, it seems.
