Seeking Spiritual Amid Death at SAINT MAUD
Not much happened at Saint Maud . If we look at the concept, this film only tells of a nurse, Maud (Morfydd Clark) in a city in England who is in charge of taking care of a patient, Amanda (Jennifer Ehle) while struggling with her conscience about God and beliefs and beliefs. The concept is uncomplicated and even sounds like a religious film. But with that simple concept Rose Glass succeeded in making a film that not only succeeded in making us glued but also began to be hypnotized by how this film was going.
Here, death is a very strong theme. As the film begins, we see Maud who seems to have failed to save a patient. This incident haunts him, so he is determined to always try to protect Amanda, who has lymphoma and is in critical condition and must use a wheelchair. He again met someone who was like that with death and Maud had made it his mission to save Amanda's soul.
There are moments in this film where it feels so light and fun. At first, we saw Amanda who was open to Maud who always preached about God and how God is always by our side. We then see them spending time together, like Maud helping Amanda to warm up and stretch her body because previously Amanda was a successful dancer. But the longer Saint Maud turns his direction, and it seems that what we see is not arbitrary. Maybe Amanda just followed what Maud said even though he didn't believe it, or maybe he would make fun of Maud.

This is how Rose Glass works well with her narrative, as she is not only playing with Maud but also the audience. Here at first we see Maud as a person who is devout and noble-hearted, but the cynicism of the world around him makes him increasingly question his beliefs. We see him always trying to pour out his heart to God, but the more it seems that he has trouble staying optimistic. "If this is how You treat Your most loyal followers, I tremble to think what awaits those who avoid You," he reflected on God, but in the middle of the sentence there was a feeling that he was not only talking to God, but also to himself. He tried to persistently convince himself.

This film may be labeled a horror film , but there are actually not many scenes that really scare us. Maybe at the end of a film where a new film really starts to bring out the horror elements at their fullest. Smart Saint Maud is how of shades, the story and the characters already creepy enough without the need to make the film a creepy scene. Seeing someone having to struggle with a crisis of identity and trust without feeling sure about their life is scary enough, because Maud's ambiguity makes not only his character but also the film's story more difficult to predict. As a viewer, I can only surrender to what Rose Glass will present in the next scene.

It's awesome to see Saint Maud as his first film Rose Glass as a director and writer for a film. There is no carelessness in building tension and telling the characters, there are no moments that feel wasted, especially from how effective this film, which is only 83 minutes long, and how perfect it is in utilizing various kinds of really complicated and heavy themes such as: death; trust; solitude, and make it a work that manages to hold on to its narrative with its unique horror genre .

(Morfydd Clark) 's appearance was vital here in playing Maud and for advancing the story. Her long hair gives a mysterious feel to her already mysterious character. His clumsy behavior in the middle of a crowd of people makes us even more stunned by his character because throughout the film we are always curious about his character.

At one point we feel sincere, but at other times we feel how pessimistic Maud's character is. This film is indeed labeled as horror, but more than that, this film is about a character study to take a closer look at how one should grapple and figure out what is good and right. He may have a noble heart, but everyone always has limits and Maud is not an exception.
