Summons Virtual Spirits with HOST
With only 57 minutes, Host managed to watch the scariest movie I have met this year. It may be because I am not a horror fan so I have not watched many horror films this year, but still Host is a film that effectively utilizes surrounding circumstances and technology to generate tension and build terrifying nuances to blow the audience with unbelievable shocks. creepy.
Produced when the COVID-19 pandemic had hit, Host told a group of people who were chatting via video calls using the Zoom application. Of course the reason why this film was made was not only to save budget costs but also because the quarantine period was still running. But with such large limitations, this film still with great success presents something both authentic and creepy.

Yes, authentic. This film feels real and that is what most horror films with a similar theme find difficult to achieve , namely how to convince the audience to feel that the film looks like something real. The hosts succeeded in that. With the entire film on the Zoom app, the creepy nuance becomes even more thrilling because the center of our attention cannot be brought anywhere but towards the camera that shows each character as well as their rear.
The story is also not too complicated, and the minimalist nature of the story also makes it easier for the film's nuances to build steadily. Six people, who look like close friends, hold a séance ritual with Haley (Haley Bishop) who is seen leading the six and inviting her acquaintance as well as an intermediary to another world, Seylan (Seylan Baxter). So now there are seven people participating in this ritual.

Or at least that's their plan because Teddy (Edward Linard), one of their friends, cut off his video call connection because his partner keeps annoying him. Now, six people are on that app. Haley and Seylan repeatedly told not to play when this ritual was interrupted, but of course like most young people, there are those who take this ritual lightly and it doesn't take long for everyone to realize that it's because of their childish and did not seriously cause something mysterious to start happening to each participant.

The element of authenticity in the Host is really strong, especially from all the characters in it. They describe a group of friends that I really describe if I and my friends do the same ritual through the Zoom application. Some are serious, some are playing around, some are already frightened, some are already excited about drinking alcohol and challenge everyone to drink one glass of alcohol every time Seylan says "astral plane".

Rob Savage as the director and one of the writers is also very good at building tension and eerie nuances during the film. What I like best is the placement of the cameras of each participant, where almost all of them, whether coincidence or not, have a camera position that shows their character against the open door of the room or a large, dark room (living room, for example).
As the film progresses, I always try to see if there is something going on behind them that they don't know but that is visible to me and that's the exciting point in this film. Indirectly, this film also involved me to keep paying attention to every part of the camera so that I always felt tense even though I knew there was nothing. And when I brought my eyes closer to the screen to take a closer look at their dark room, there were pleasant surprises that made me immediately lower the volume of the film and take my head away from the screen again.
