This is one of the films that tells the story of a mother who is looking for her lost child. This story sounds very often used, both for stories based on true stories like Lost Girl or fictional stories like Bring Me Home , a South Korean film directed by Kim Seung-woo in his first film he directed.

By using that story, it becomes a challenge how this film can give something new. Overall, this film is, unfortunately, still trapped into the “parents looking for children” cliché so nothing really new, but what makes  Bring Me Home interesting is how this film is able to inject the thriller genre  into the middle.

In the middle of this story is Jung-yeon ( Lee Young-ae ), a nurse and a mother whose son, Yoon-su, went missing six years earlier. Even though she has been missing for years, she and her husband are persistent in looking for their child. The film has not yet reached 20 minutes, a tragedy befell her husband.

While driving, he received an SMS which distracted him from the road and caused an accident that took his life. His sudden death may have been intended to shock the audience, but it actually didn't cause me any emotional reaction and maybe it was because of how much time I spent with this character.

Not only that, his death did not really affect the course of the story either. Maybe it could make a difference, but  Bring Me Home didn't focus so much on her husband Jung-yeon's death as something big that it just passed. And this is only around 16 minutes.

After her husband's death, Jung-yeon receives news that a little boy who has traits with Yoon-su is on a fishing rod located on an island. This fishing rod is run by ex-convicts and criminals, where two young children work like slaves in this place. One of the children is believed to be Yoon-su, who has been missing for years.

Half the film is running like a mystery drama film in general. Nothing really stands out, nothing really shocks other than a few scenes where Min-su (the child believed to be Yoon-su) is abused by the person who hired him. There are even some scenes which, although not overt, give the impression that she is being sexually assaulted.

Some of those scenes were just uncomfortable to watch, and they did manage to draw my emotions into the film. But half the film goes on for quite a while and it's rare for something to fully grab my attention. His mystery drama does work, but is less effective.

But halfway through the film, when Jung-yeon begins investigating the fishing, only then does the thriller genre  begin to enter the film. And it is very interesting to see, and not infrequently I also feel the tension when following Jung-yeon who is struggling to find out who Min-su is because he was always hidden while Jung-yeon was around the fishing.

What makes the story part of the film even more interesting is the fact that one of the residents who live in this fishing pond is also a policeman, Sergeant Hong ( Yoo Jae-myung ). He is a corrupt cop and it is not uncommon when his interlocutors disagree that he will, loudly, say "I am a policeman." Of course his existence makes the whole situation for Jung-yeon even more tense and tense.

With the majority of the time set at night, the  thriller that appears in the film becomes more calming and even leads to  horror . Moreover, coupled with the beautiful and clear cinematography by Lee Mo-gae ,  Bring Me Home is able to capture the beauty and horror of the sea and its ferocious waves and bring more to life the  thriller that the film has.

Lee Young-ae  who plays the main character is also what makes  Bring Me Home overcome the "cliché" problem she has suffered, where she is able to portray an emotional, hopeful, tired to angry and angry mother, making the energy she generates really feels for film running. With him, we are invited to sympathize with him and always support what he will do even if it reaches an extreme.

Bring Me Home tells the story of a mother's struggle to find the whereabouts of her child who has been missing for six years. First released at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival, some critics have called this film by Kim Seung Woo "not suitable for those of you who are timid." With a storyline that contains many  plot twists  and gripping scenes, this thriller drama film makes the audience feel what the main character is experiencing.

The story of the search for children by their parents is a thriller genre . The storyline that was delivered was quite tragic and terrible. Not a little violence appears in this film. It is highly discouraged to watch this with children because the violence that occurs is also related to children.

At the beginning of this film, we are faced with how depressed these two parents are, making the film even darker. There are also people who take advantage of the situation by tricking Jung Yeon into getting money. We can see the many human sides of this film that are very likely around us now.
