MOONRAKER, Silly but Fun

Many say that  Moonraker , the eleventh James Bond film and the fourth starring Roger Moore, is the worst film for the agent coded 007. The story is very different from the previous films, the feel that feels like a comedy film, and the abundant use of gadgets are some of the reasons why people call it a very bad James Bond film, but I reject that statement.

Moonraker was released in 1979, at a time when the world was hit by the Star Wars phenomenonthat had been released two years earlier. Previously the producers planned to make  For Your Eyes Only , but chose to prioritize  Moonraker because action films set in outer space were on the rise. Yes, outer space is one of the locations that James Bond visits to defeat his enemy, Hugo Drax (Michael Lonsdale) who plans to destroy the earth and recreate the human species with the humans of his choice.

From start to finish,  Moonraker is a film that never stops delivering spectacular stunts of its time. Starting from where James Bond is pushed out by Jaws (Richard Kiel) - the enemy from the previous film - from an airplane and requires Bond to steal a parachute from his enemy who has already jumped first, and ends with a space war between US troops. with Drax's men.

Filled with lots of splashy actions, it is not uncommon for Moonraker to feel ridiculous at times, because of how impossible the actions of James Bond are. However, it is not uncommon for these actions to invite laughter and are fun to watch. In one scene, James Bond who changes his ship from walking on water to walking on land, during the day in the city of Venice that makes people confused when he saw it. Seeing this scene, I thought “This seems like a possibility if it really is,” but I am also entertained and that is the main purpose of a James Bond film, to be entertaining.

Moonraker also seems to be one of the funniest films in the James Bond film series, something I didn't expect. Even Jaws, where in  The Spy Who Loved Me is described as one of Bond's strongest enemies and also the most terrifying, but here the actions often invite laughter. Like the time when his cable car lost control and crashed into the building in front of him, he was helped by a woman who was only half his height. What happened? They fell in love. Something I never expected happened to Jaws, who was big and had iron teeth.

The story that may be too ambitious and feels like it is out of this world (literally) can still be enjoyed as a film that is fun to watch. Roger Moore, who has played James Bond four times, can also be trusted as a 007 agent if previously we were still difficult to erase the traces left by Sean Connery. Starting with Live and Let Die in 1973, Roger Moore didn't try to follow Sean Connery's James Bond, but he did set his own standards. He has a different charisma than Sean Connery, making his James Bond unique.

Even though the story does feel very wild, it's still a James Bond film. Moonraker still uses recipes from previous James Bond films. At the beginning of the film, he always faces life threatening situations. Then he is given a mission by M (Bernard Lee) to save the world, in the middle of a mission he meets a beautiful woman and sleeps with her (either enemy or friend), then he meets his enemy who explains his evil plan, after which Bond wins and saves the world and again sleeping with the beautiful woman who accompanied him during the mission.

The James Bond recipe may sound trite, but somehow it always works. Even in films that rely heavily on technology like  Moonraker , the James Bond storyline is still interesting to watch from start to finish. That's also the reason why I always call that no James Bond film is bad. Even if he has to be flown into space and make  a James Bond version of Star Wars  , the film is still interesting and fun to watch.
