Darkness of War and Past in HEARTS AND BONES

Hugo Weaving is one of my favorite actors. His low- key career  is one of the charisma of the British actor who lives in Australia. He is known for his big films like  The Matrix ,  The Lord of the Rings , and  V for Vendetta . But his films like  Proof ,  The Interview and  Last Ride are also more than good films and thanks to the appearance of Hugo Weaving. Now he is starring in Australia's newest film,  Hearts and Bones,  which premiered in June last year at the Sydney Film Festival .

Hearts and bones, the meaning of the name of the film's title seems appropriate to describe the contents of this film. Heart, because this film does have a big heart and is able to bring and accommodate the humanity of each character. Bones because of the war theme embraced by Ben Lawrence, the director and writer along with Beatrix Christian. This, interestingly, was also Ben Lawrence's first film as a film director.

Hugo Weaving plays a character named Daniel Fisher or who is often called "Dan". Daniel (when using "Dan" is afraid to be confused with the word "and") is a photographer whose job requires that he be flown to an area that is currently in war. We are introduced to Daniel at the beginning of the film while he is on duty, photographing an abandoned car in the middle of the road with a dead passenger. Theft? Murder? Daniel did not look at the reason for the car, and quickly took a photo of the car and the victim in it.

When he returned home and prepared for the photo exhibition to be held, he was visited by a taxi driver at his home. "OK, I didn't order a taxi," Daniel said. This taxi driver apparently comes from South Sudan named Sebastian Ahmed (Andrew Luri). South Sudan is one of the places Daniel has visited for work due to a civil war. Sebastian asked Daniel not to display the photos he got in South Sudan at the upcoming exhibition.

Sebastian's request raised questions not only for Daniel but also for me. Is it true that the war photos he got, in which the photo depicts the brutality of war, deserve to be displayed as large as possible for the public to see? On the other hand, the photos are also important to remind people that war is really bad, and that is why photographers like Daniel exist, to capture the brutal side of a war that no one has seen before.

Just like me, Daniel also faces a big dilemma. Not only that, he also just found out that his girlfriend, Josie (Hayley McElhinney) has been pregnant for 15 weeks. But he was shocked, because not only did he just find out about it but also because they had a previous child who had died. All of this eventually weighed on his mind and he suffered a panic attack. His work so far has also had a bad impact, where he has continually seen the cruelty of a war. From time to time, there was no rest for Daniel.

Hugo Weaving, as usual, plays his character with totality, especially because Daniel's character is very emotionally heavy. He's stressed, he's sad, he's had a heart attack. From Daniel, we can feel how hard the journey has been and how tough the road ahead is. But what really shines here is Sebastian himself. It is because of him that this story exists, and because of him the emotionality of the film becomes more pronounced.

We can see Sebastian's persistence in working on this second chance. He worked in two jobs at once, working in the laundry and as a taxi driver. He is also married, with his wife, Anishka (Bolude Watson) and two children, one of whom is still in the stomach. He is also a member of a choir community, each of whose members consist of immigrants whose countries have been hit by war. Sebastian also invited Daniel to come to the community meeting, because he learned that Daniel had PTSD or post-traumatic stress disorder from his job.

Both of them have very different backgrounds, but there is a friendship between the two of them because they both have seen firsthand how the war happened. One of the most emotionally draining moments occurred when Daniel granted Sebastian's request to show the photos he had received in South Sudan. Sebastian, slowly, tells his dark past, how he was directly involved in the civil war that has spread throughout the country. Daniel could only be silent, while his eyes filled with tears.

It would be amazing to know that this was his first act for Andrew Luri. The South Sudanese actor migrated to Australia in 2003, and in his first film he not only managed to rival the acting of veteran actor Hugo Weaving, but he was able to add depth to his character from an emotional side and make Sebastian's character really draw sympathy from him. the audience, and me of course.

One of my favorite scenes takes place in the middle of the film. Sebastian is interested in moving into his new house, and he and Daniel clean the new house because it looks worn out. They pulled out carpets, changed curtains and doors, and cleaned her house from day to night. For a moment, the two of them forgot the bitterness of their past. For a moment, they forgot what their future was like. They only focus on one thing only, which is fixing up Sebastian's new house. Hearts and Bones has really big hearts, and it's all thanks to Daniel Fisher and Sebastian Ahmed.
