In FATMAN, Now Santa Claus is on the Hunt

In  Fatman , the figure of Santa Claus is not a fat person with a red coat and a smile. Here, he is named Chris Cringle (played by Mel Gibson with a thick beard) and he is not fat. He is an old man who likes to spend his time in a nearby bar and grumbles that the children in this world are getting naughty and the fewer gifts he gives every Christmas because as we know, Santa Claus only gives gifts to good children.

Because the number of good boys was getting smaller, the gifts Chris made and sent were fewer and resulted in less income from him, so that in the end he had to accept an offer to make new components of fighter jets for the United States army just to make up for the losses he had suffered. . Santa Claus building a jet fighter? This is one of the many eccentric traits this film has.

Fatman , a film directed by Eshom and Ian Nelms' brothers, combines legend and mystique with the real world, resulting in a unique character figure even though he has been depicted very often before in various media. Here, Chris Cringle still resembles Santa Claus who travels a lot to send gifts with a bunch of elves - a gift maker worker for Chris who has sharp ears and is shorter than the average human - still working for him in a warehouse near his house. And interestingly Chris's world is coupled to our real world, with the interaction of people who think of Chris as Santa Claus and also think of him as another grumpy old man.

And while Santa Claus working for the army sounds pretty wild, that's not his main problem in this film or his financial problem. It is an assassin (Walton Goggins) who is the main problem, who is assigned to kill Chris by a rich and arrogant little boy named Billy Wenan (Chance Hurstfield) because he is annoyed that he finds a gift of coal by Chris on Christmas Eve.

Fatman may still not be sure how to change the tone of the film as it progresses, which sometimes feels stiff when you want to combine or change from its fantasy elements which then transform into an  action thriller film afterwards. But even so, there is still excitement in it, making this a film that still has its own uniqueness that makes it quite exciting to follow.

For characters, there are three important characters that form the foundation of the story. One of them is Billy, a boy whose presence and personality seems very cliché and always has a cringe feeling  when he appears. He is an example of a child who was willing to kidnap a classmate who managed to beat him at the science fair at his school just because he didn't want to be in second place. His cunning doesn't seem new, interesting or fun, so I never eagerly await his presence.

But what is really interesting are the two other characters, Walton Goggins as the killer who is given the name "Skinny Man" in the  final credits of the film and Mel Gibson as Chris Cringle. Perhaps it can be said that amidst the wild and unstable story, these two characters are what make  Fatman a more enjoyable film than it should be.

Walton Goggins is no stranger to the role of a cold-blooded sadistic killer (for example, see his role in the Justified series  ), and in  Fatman he can still make his character even more fun to follow. The character here also has an eccentric nature that is not inferior to the nature of the film. He likes to buy Chris's Christmas gifts from other people because of his childhood which was disappointed by the experiences Chris had found, and also he has a pet hamster that he always carries even if he has to go abroad.

This film is labeled as a dark comedy but in fact even for a dark comedy even though the humor this film has is still either very old or not at all. What's funny is not in this film, but the concept of this film itself which makes the audience scratch their heads because it's really strange that this film is quite unique and entertaining. Santa Claus, who always grumbled even for profit, said he wanted to charge people who used his  image around the world. Santa Claus who is in depression he often spends his time at the bar and even though he is Santa Claus, no one cares. Here, he is Chris Cringle.
