THE CLOSET is How Narnia Meets Horror

Today's horror- type films have to be very creative, because the use of jump scares has been used very often and seems stale. How do they have to give a scary feeling not with a jump scare , but with the story and atmosphere that it built is quite difficult and only a few horror films have managed to make goosebumps on my spine not by using a jump scare .

The Closet , although it has a story and a unique concept frommost horror films, unfortunately it has to fall into the cliché of horror films. His execution in giving his viewers fun is only limited to a jump scare that mostly and effectively kills the story he is building.

The start of the film The Closet actually seemed promising. We see an old recording where a mother is performing a ritual to cast out demons in a cupboard, but unfortunately a disaster strikes that finally starts the story of the film. The old recording, which only lasts a few minutes, can build a creepy impression because the atmosphere of the video really builds up the hair on your neck. The reverberating drums, the constant ritual speech and the old video give off a creepy horror impression .

The film then continues to tell the story of our main character, an architect and father named Sang-won (Ha Jung-woo) who is still mourning the loss of his wife in an accident some time ago. He loves his daughter Ina (Heo Yool) but his deep sorrow, constant panic attacks and his strict job often make him forget Sang-won's only daughter. He also moves to a remote house on the grounds that the clean air is a suitable environment for Ina, even though that may not be his main goal.

Since the accident that killed her mother, Ina feels distant from her father, even to the point where she doesn't want to communicate with him. But all of that is different when he is in his new home. He was like a child with a different personality, and one day he disappeared. For weeks he could not be found, and an exorcist named Kyeong-hoon (Kim Nam-gil) appeared who told Sang-won that his daughter was swallowed up into a demon world.

All of the horror in The Closet is centered on closets. So the name of this film is closet , wardrobe. Just imagine this like a Narnia movie , but instead of the cupboard bringing to a fantasy world, we are brought to the world of the afterlife. This is a film that actually has a unique concept, especially because it has a deep enough message about the relationship between parents and children.

How a father who unconsciously tries to stay away from his daughter because it is difficult to forget the death of his wife and how a child who wants to stay away from his father because he feels that his father is responsible for the death of his mother. It's not often that other horror films have this deep emotional side, and this is what makes this film quite unique.

The relationship between father and son becomes the emotional fulcrum for this film, where the emotional side has the potential to make the creepy side of this film even more… well, even more creepy. But unfortunately the emotionality of this film is not used properly because Kim Kwang-bin - the director and writer - only relies on jump scare , a technique that scares the audience not because of the tense atmosphere but because it manages to startle it. We are afraid not because it is creepy, we are afraid because we are shocked.

The Closet is a horror filmwith a unique concept. Horror fansmight be disappointed because this film relies too much on jump scares . However, this film has a human story that the audience can enjoy and learn about a father who realizes his mistake and tries to find his daughter.
