Let me guess: You’re bored and don’t know what to watch. We’ve all been there and that’s exactly why we have decided to write this article to help you out. So, let’s not stall any longer and move on to the list!
Starting strong, the first option is the TV show called Chernobyl. Just like the name indicates, this is a show based on the tragedy of the nuclear disaster that occurred on 26 April 1986, 35 years ago. If you are not aware of what happened, the No. 4 reactor in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, near the city of Pripyat in the, then, Soviet Union was set to undergo a safety test on April 26, 1986. This test failed horribly and resulted in an explosion that ruptured the reactor core and destroyed the reactor building as well. One event after the other caused an open-air reactor core fire as well which caused radioactive contamination to spread via the wind and into nearby towns, cities, and even spread as far as Western Europe.
The show has been dubbed a cinematographical masterpiece and even though it is not a 100% recreation of all the events, it was executed very nicely and gives you a clear enough picture to understand what happened. Craig Mazin, the writer of the series, has based this show on his vast research and real testimonies from survivors and witnesses. Furthermore, the creators of this series have talked about how they have changed some events for dramaturgical effects and to carry the story interestingly. However, it has mostly remained true to the actual catastrophe caused by the disaster.
This show is a definite must-watch as not only are you learning about a specific event in history, but you are learning how everything is human. Technology, as advanced as it might seem, has its flaws and its perks, and unfortunately, the greater the technology, the more dangerous if something fails. Human error applies to technology as well and if mishandled, a minor human error can turn into a major disaster. It is not just the people working in a power plant that need to learn from this, rather we as humans can also learn a thing or two from this. HBO has managed to explain history compellingly and powerfully!
The second option on this list is a South Korean black comedy thriller film released in 2019 that won multiple awards and was dubbed as one of the greatest films of the 21st century. It is also the first non-English language film that was recognized by the Academy Award and proceeded to win four awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film.
The story is a fictional tale about the poor Kim family that struggles to live day-to-day. They live in a small bug-infested home and take low-paying jobs like folding pizza boxes to afford food for themselves. Their luck changes when the son of the family is offered a job to tutor a wealthy high-school student and the entire family plots to be hired by the wealthy family by pretending not to know each other. The movie progresses calmly and the director has also reinforced the class difference and how vastly the rich differ from the poor. Just as the viewers start to settle in and go with the flow, there is a sudden shift in the story and the movie takes on a suspenseful and thriller route gripping the viewers and keeping them at the edge of their seats till the end.
At the end of the movie, we see how everything in the story eventually connects. The movie shares a powerful message about class discrimination in a melancholy tale. While the actions taken by the characters and their emotions are somewhat exaggerated, the movie depicts a very sad and ugly reality. It certainly gives you a perspective of the world around you and brings to light the class differences. It is a must-watch movie as it highlights an issue that applies to the whole world and not only one country or city.
House of Gucci is a biographical movie based on the real story of how Maurizio Gucci, the head of the Gucci fashion house, was assassinated by a hitman hired by his former wife Patrizia Reggiani on March 27, 1995. This movie was released just recently on November 24, 2021, and it has received mixed reviews. While many people say the movie was a gross exaggeration of the events and how everything played out, many others find the movie interesting and quite informative about how the events played out.
The reason we have put this movie on the must-watch list is that it is indeed interesting and informative. It gives somewhat of an insight into the life of the wealthy. It also tells us more about Patrizia’s and Maurizio’s relationship and how things started to fall apart between the two of them. We recommend that you watch this movie at least once so you can judge for yourself whether it is a good execution of the past or not.
Stepping into the world of animations, the first one on our list is the animated film, Luca, which follows the story of a young fish-like creature, and how his curiosity leads him to explore “above the surface” along with his new friend. The story is very simple and cute filled with the two boys’ fun-filled adventures while they continuously try to hide the fact that they are the so-called “sea monsters”. This is a feel-happy movie that makes its way into your heart and you can enjoy it with your family now and then.
The second animated film on our list is the latest movie: Encanto. It is a musical comedy film with catchy tunes, a wonderful story, and beautiful animations. This animated film was awarded the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film and the National Board of Review Award for Best Animated Film. The story follows a young girl named “Mirabel” who is different and ordinary as compared to her “gifted” family. While she constantly tries to keep up with her family and not feel upset about her predicament, things don’t seem to quite work her way and her luck seems rotten as she is repeatedly let down.
This movie is also a light-hearted fun movie that addresses some concerning and relatable topics, especially ones like insecurity, trauma, etc. Instead of focusing mostly on Mirabel and her problems, the creators have done a great job in incorporating other characters and their individual problems, which are quite commonly experienced in our society. Characters are given a real factor and are designed to be relatable to the viewers which makes them have an emotional connection and empathize with the character. This is the reason why this movie made it into our list and is a must-watch!
