The name of the director Kornél Mundruczó may not sound familiar to many world film lovers

Pieces of a Woman marks Mundruczó's first time directing a film in English. With a story script written by Kata Wéber- who previously worked with Mundruczó to write the script for the film White God - Pieces of a Woman was adapted from a stage play by Mundruczó and Wéber whose storyline itself was inspired by their life experiences as a couple who had a child abortion.

Pieces of a Woman opens with a tense, dramatic first half of the storytelling, which will also be able to make every audience hold their thirst as well as their feelings of emotion. Martha Weiss ( Vanessa Kirby ) will soon give birth to her first daughter as a result of her relationship with her lover, Sean Carson ( Shia LaBeouf ). Both have decided to have a home birth that will be assisted by a midwife named Eva Woodward ( Molly Parker). 

Initially, the delivery process that was undertaken by Martha Weiss went like an ordinary delivery. However, a tragedy occurred shortly after the baby was born into the world. The baby girl had difficulty breathing and later died. Obviously, the wound left a deep wound on Martha Weiss. The wounds that then could not be handled and slowly had a negative effect on the relationship that Martha Weiss had with her lover and those around her.

Admittedly, the first half of the story of Pieces of a Woman, which tells about the childbirth process of the character Martha Weiss and is presented without pause for more than 20 minutes, is able to present a real impression of discomfort. Indeed, Mundruczó provided a stage play for the long scene - from the placement and motion of the camera to the composition of the interactions that exist between the characters involved in the scene.

The touch is successful in producing a very strong intimate impression. Brutal, but very, very effective. The intensity that is formed throughout the scene is also able to make the audience forget a little about the characters they don't know but whose stories they are following. Supported by the slick performances of Kirby, LaBeouf, and Parker, the emotional structure of the story begins to build since the beginning of the film's storytelling.

Unfortunately, after the first half that drew attention, Pieces of a Woman began to appear with a shaky storytelling. Armed with a pile of conflicts stemming from the breakdown of the relationship between the two main characters, the relationship between the two main characters and the character Elizabeth Weiss ( Ellen Burstyn) who is the mother of the character Martha Weiss, until the lawsuits filed by the two main characters against Eva Woodward's character, Mundruczó, find it difficult to determine the focus of the story as well as provide a complete story exploration on these conflicts.

As a result, as the title of this film indicates, the conflicts that appear in this film are more often seen as fragments of a story that are never able to produce a complete narrative bond. The strongest element of the Pieces of a Woman presentation clearly comes from the quality of the acting department. Each actor brings their best acting performance to bring each character they play to life. Almost flawless. With her character depicted going through so many emotional journeys and hindrances, Kirby's appearance is definitely the show that stands out the most. 

Fortunately, Kirby has never been trapped into making her character a figure that appears full of emotional outbursts and instead executes her as a calculating character so that the level of emotion that the character feels can slowly be embedded in the minds of every eye that follows her story. Chemistrywhich he presented with LaBeouf also looked convincing which made the rift between the two characters they played even more painful to witness. Burstyn, Parker, and Sarah Snook also put on great looks in their supporting performances.
